Shab-e-Barat and its Importance in Islam?

Shab-e-Barat, also known as Laylat al-Bara’at or Laylat al-Nisf, holds immense value in Islam. Islamic scholars narrate that it is a night when Allah Almighty forgives the Muslim Ummah. It has also been believed that this is the night of destinies, during which the lifespans or life events are written.

The Night of Forgiveness

The midnight of Shaban, the Shab-e-Barat is considered the best time to remove your sins and receive Allah’s pleasure and forgiveness. The Messenger of Allah (?) said:

“When it is the night of the middle of Sha’ban, spend its night in prayer and observe a fast on that day. For Allah descends at sunset on that night to the lowest heaven and says: ‘Is there no one who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there no one who will ask Me for provision, that I may provide for him? Is there no one who is afflicted by trouble, that I may relieve him?’ And so on, until dawn comes.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1388)

The Night of Destinies

It has also been believed by many Muslims that Shab-e-Barat is not only the night to seek Allah’s forgiveness but also to request Allah for a blessed and prosperous future. It is believed that on this night the lifespan, the wealth, and all other life events are written. So, it is the time to ask Allah for a better life.

Common Practices to Do during Shab-e-Barat

Muslims from across the world celebrate the night as a night of forgiveness. They look very excited, as everyone believes that Allah will forgive their sins and offer them a prosperous life. Muslims follow different practices purely for the sake of Allah’s pleasure and to seek His forgiveness. Here are the common practices to be followed not only to seek forgiveness but also to have a better future.

Special Nawafil Prayers

The best way to be engaged in Allah’s worship is to offer special nawafil or prayers. There is no limit to offering voluntary prayers; you can perform as many as are suitable for you.

Reciting the Holy Quran

Another best practice to follow on this night is to recite the Holy Quran. It is advisable to recite the Holy Quran with translation in a language that you understand. It is the best way to learn Allah’s messages clearly.

Attending Islamic Gatherings

Many Masajid and other Islamic organizations organize Islamic conferences or gatherings. The purpose of these gatherings is to teach Muslims about the importance of this night, the values of Islam, the Seerah of the Prophet, and how to seek Allah’s pleasure and forgiveness. We must attend these gatherings, as these can be the means of our salvation.

Making Special Dua

As this is the night of forgiveness, we must keep asking forgiveness from Allah throughout the night. Make special Dua privately in loneliness, or you can also participate in collective prayers or dua.

Take Care of the Poor

On this night, we must also take care of the poor, as this kind act can help us get Allah’s pleasure and seek His forgiveness. We must have a look at our surroundings and see if there is anyone who is in trouble and fulfill their needs.

What to Avoid During Shab-e-Barat

We see Muslims get involved in foolish pursuits on this night that can become the reason for Allah’s displeasure. As a Muslim being, we must always try to avoid such things and try to teach people in our circle what can provoke Allah’s anger.

Firecrackers and Fireworks: Engaging in noisy street celebrations that waste money, cause distress to neighbors, and ruin the quiet atmosphere of worship.

Street Roaming and Entertainment: Spending the night hanging out in crowds, treating it as a casual holiday rather than utilizing the time for private prayer.

We must also avoid any other practice that can harm others, as Islam teaches us to take care of others.

Who Will Not Be Forgiven on This Night?

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said that Allah will forgive everyone except those who are Mushrik (someone who practices Shirk, meaning associating partners with Allah). Besides this, Allah’s Messenger also said that people who are filled with hate or murderers will also not be forgiven on this night.

“Allah looks down on the night of the middle of Sha’ban and forgives all His creation, apart from the idolater and the Mushrik.” Another chain from Abu Musa, from the Prophet (?), with similar wording. (Sunan Ibn Majah: 1390)

“Allah ?audits? his creation during the night of the middle of ?the month of ? Sha?ban, then He forgives all His servants, except for the one filled with hate or a murderer.” (Musnad Ahmed: 6642)

Give Sadaqah on Shab-e-Barat

Among the best acts of kindness, relieving someone from pain or trouble is the best practice. On the special event of Shab-e-Barat, when we seek Allah’s forgiveness, we must also support Allah’s creation. Allah said that “and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity” (Quran 5:32).
