The Science

How does gene therapy work?

Gene Therapy uses a multistep biomedical process to fix the root cause of the disease. Here is how the process works.

Stem Cell Collection

Healthy blood-forming stem cells, also known as hematopoietic cells, are collected from the patient's blood or bone marrow.

Genetic Modification

In a specialized laboratory, a functional copy of the missing or mutated gene is introduced into these stem cells using a modified and harmless viral vector.

Conditioning

The patient undergoes a brief preparation phase to clear space in the bone marrow for the new cells.

Infusion

The newly developed stem cells are infused back into the patient's bloodstream, where they travel to the bone marrow and begin producing healthy, normal red blood cells.
