Munnu Bhai was a celebrated journalist, poet, columnist, and one of Pakistan's most cherished writers. His journey began as a translator for an Urdu newspaper, but his extraordinary talent soon led him to the world of drama and literature. As a playwright, he became a cornerstone of Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV), writing some of its most iconic works. His timeless drama Sona Chandi (1982) remains a classic, alongside other notable creations such as Ashiana, Dasht, and the environmental documentary Before It’s Too Late. He also wrote Tamanna, a UK-Pakistani film featuring Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's music, showcasing his ability to craft narratives that resonate deeply. Munnu Bhai's Punjabi poetry is widely regarded as a masterpiece of modern Punjabi literature. As a columnist for Daily Jang, his insightful and fearless writing earned him a place among Pakistan's finest voices. For his exceptional contributions to literature and society, he was honored with the Pride of Performance Award in 2007 and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Crescent of Excellence) posthumously in 2018. Beyond his literary brilliance, Munnu Bhai's compassion knew no bounds. His love for humanity inspired the creation of Sundas Foundation, a light of hope for patients battling Thalassemia and other blood disorders. His life's work reflected his profound empathy for society's struggles and his unwavering commitment to justice and truth. Munnu Bhai had an unmatched ability to illuminate societal flaws through his writings, giving voice to the voiceless. He passed away on 19 January 2018 in Lahore at the age of 84, but his legacy stays in his timeless works and the countless lives he touched. Munnu Bhai’s life was a testament to selflessness, resilience, and an enduring love for humanity. Through his words and actions, he remains an inspiration for generations to come.
